After Hours Event at EPCOT
we’ve looked at the after hours events at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios which leaves us one park to look at and that is EPCOT Center.

How to Navigate (the Clockwise/Counterclockwise Decision)
EPCOT is divided into four areas as follows:
World Showcase: The international pavilions around the lagoon
World Celebration: The central hub area (Spaceship Earth, Connections Café, etc.)
World Discovery: The thrill/technology attractions (Guardians, Mission: SPACE, Test Track area)
World Nature: The nature-focused attractions (The Land, The Seas, Moana walkthrough)
So how best to navigate through the park during after hours? Well at first I thought about how I felt it should be done but I felt a bit unsure of my thoughts because other than The Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, EPCOT attractions most favored by guests are far apart so I was torn about making suggestions.
Experience is the best teacher so I leaned on folks who have done after hours at EPCOT and looked for information that kept repeating itself including strategies that worked and more importantly strategies that did not work.
I’m going to get straight to the point. Guardians of the Galaxy, being the most popular attraction in the park, should be treated as such in the after hours event. From what I have heard and read this attraction appears to have its longest line towards the end of the night.
Why? Well I can think of only two reasons why this is the case. I think in the first place guests feel that the lines will be longest at the beginning of the night so the thought is to save it for last. Secondly, the lines may be longest towards the end of the evening because the attraction is close to the exit.
It really doesn’t matter. All I have learned from research is that this attraction has the longest lines towards the end of the after hours event. It goes without saying that perhaps the best strategy is probably to get into the park around 7:00 PM and perhaps take in Spaceship Earth and then saunter over to Guardians if the wait is around 30 minutes or so. Remember that there could be Lightning Lane guests which will make for a longer queue. Honestly it is very hard to say for sure doing Guardians early on is the best choice….just going by what I read.
I’ll leave you with one quote from someone who left that attraction for last….he said, “Cosmic Rewind had its longest line of the night in the final 15 minutes.”
Good luck.
Okay, let’s assume we do Guardians sometime between 8:30 and 9:30.
Think of how far other attractions are to this one…so how do we navigate?
Hold on…as you get off Guardians you really should stroll over to see how long the wait is to get on again. If not too bad (less than 30 minutes) then why not get in the queue so you can check off that box for the night?
Okay, from Guardians we are heading over to Test Track, This could be a back-to-back experience depending upon the initial wait in line. Again, the number to keep in mind is 20 to 30 minutes.
If you are not claustrophobic and you are a Mission:Space fan then go for it next…otherwise it’s time to move on.
Now here is where another decision needs to be made…do you go on to Mexico and Norway for the Gran Fiesta Tour and Frozen Ever after or cut across and hit The Seas with Nemo and Friends and Soarin’ before heading to World Showcase?
I guess you could actually go to Mexico first and do the Grand Fiesta Tours and then Frozen Ever After (each once) and then it’s along walk to get to Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in France.
Then you could take another long walk to get to Soarin’, Living with the Land, and then The Seas with Nemo and Friends.
If you have time left over you could hit Spaceship Earth or try Guardians again before leaving for the the night.
You could do this in reverse as I mentioned earlier but here’s my thought…going clockwise around World Showcase may get you a chance to do Guardians one more time before leaving the park. EPCOT is very much spread out so I would say conservatively that at least 45 minutes of your three hours will be chewed up just going from one attraction to the next one.
A few more things I have learned.
The average cycle time for Cosmic Rewind from entering the queue to exiting the ride at about 30 minutes and half the time the attraction was operating at half-capacity for the entirety of EPCOT after hours events.
Here’s the other thing, if you have visited EPCOT since Guardians has opened you may have experienced the attraction breaking down while you are in the queue…what if that happens during an after hours event? How long do you wait before saying, “I’m outta here!” Something to think about.
One person remarked, “Cosmic Rewind seldom dropped below a 60 minute posted wait time for the entirety of EPCOT after hours. There were a couple of times I saw it at 45 minutes, but it was 60 minutes for the vast majority of the time between 10:00 PM and 1:00 AM.“
Hmmm.
Another person remarked that it seemed there were four very popular rides during the event and they were Guardians, Test Track, Frozen Ever After, and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. And funny thing, most people just focused on those four rides and tried to get two experiences on each for a total of eight over the course of three hours.
Here’s another statement I found to be telling, “Due to the size of EPCOT and distance between headliners, bouncing around simply eats up too much of the clock.”
My Take
Sorry, but I am not sure if the after hours event at EPCOT is worth the money and time. If the event was four hours long or ran from 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM perhaps it would be worth it.
The culprit here is Luminous: the Story of Us. If it weren’t for that nighttime spectacular perhaps the event could begin at 9:00 PM…then again why not begin the event at 9:00 PM and allow only event guests onto attractions from 9:00 PM while the non event guests can enjoy the fireworks and then hit the stores on the way out.
But three hours is not enough in a theme park where the headliner attractions are spread out.
At least that is my $.02.
See you next time.

The pod inspired me to get cracking on Substack. I’ve been working through all the old episodes over the last few weeks…I’m currently at Christmas 2024. Still a long way to go to get caught up, but I’m working on it!
